Roads

Except for Hawthorne Drive, which is currently the only private road in the township, all other roads are either under the authority and responsibility of the MDOT (Michigan Department of Transportation) or the CCRD (Calhoun County Road Department).

Highways with Interstate, Business Loop, U.S., or M designation are the responsibility of MDOT. In Marshall township, this includes I-69, I-94, BL-94, and M-96. All other roads are either county primary roads, county secondary roads, or local roads.

There are no township roads in the Michigan road system. While townships are permitted by law to expend “surplus” on improving and maintaining roads under contracts with the county road department, the township government is not required to do so. Maintenance of all public roads in the township not under the authority of MDOT is the responsibility of the CCRD to maintain.
